Bridlington are hosting their first ever walking festival that takes hikers and novice walkers alike on a series of walks around the Yorkshire Countrysde so that you can experience the true beauty of our home county.

Hobtastic Trail at Ryedale Folk Museum

Scarborough Goldwing Light Parade

Scarborough’s Goldwing Light Parade is a true spectacle, and it’s returning each September. This event draws hundreds of Honda Goldwing motorbikes from across the country, decorated with an array of lights that illuminate the streets in a display like no other

Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey is a trademark feature of the coastal town that has stood its ground for nearly 1500 years. A vital component in the history of the Church of England, this monastery was founded in 657 AD and became a permanent Viking settlement in the 9th century. The Abbey was eroded by harsh weather conditions but stands proudly today as an English Heritage site.

The 199 Steps

But these steps aren’t just a spectacular sight, they are also laced with historical significance. Believed to have originated as wooden slabs in 1340, they were replaced by today’s Sneaton stone paving in 1774.
Before the graveyard was closed for burials, coffins were often carried up these steps by family and friends towards St Mary’s Church - the very summit of the stairway. They were also believed to be used as a test of faith to those who wished to worship at the church.

Whitby Lighthouse

Although Witby is now familiarly known as a tourist town, its origin lies as an industrial port, shipbuilding town and whaling destination. The collapse of this industry is likely what has caused the abundance of whales that can be spotted coursing through the waves, but the evidence for Whitby’s strong history lies at the end of the famous West Pier.
Whitby’s magnificent West Pier Lighthouse is still operational today after 150 years of grounded use. It remains a beacon, to guide large ships home safely, and you too can stroll along the pier to view this piece of history up close.
Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for the innocent ghost of the old lighthouse worker who tragically fell to his death in treacherous conditions. One stormy night, he heroically braved the weather to restore the light and keep the ships upon the sea safe. Some believe you can still catch him climbing the steps, soaked through to his bones to bring vessels safely into the docks.

Whitby Brewery

For those who are partial to a tipple, Whitby Brewery is the place for you. Established in 2013, this small team of craftsmen are passionate about creating real Yorkshire Ale and are keen to bring you along for the ride.
Join their 45 minute brewery tour where you will learn about the ale making process from equipment to ingredients and the brewing itself. After which, you’ll be guided to their on-site bar and be welcomed to sample three of their spectacular Yorkshire Ales.

Whitby to Sandsend Walk

There really is nothing like a walk along the Yorkshire Coast, and the 2.9 mile hike from Whitby to Sandsend is certainly one of the best of them.
The walk begins at the Whitby West Cliff Beach Huts where you can make a quick stop for refreshments before you set off. If you glance over the sea to your right, you’ll be able to see Sandsend peeking out from the bottom of the cliffs.
When the tide is out, you can choose to stroll along the beach for 2 miles, engulfed in the sound of the waves tumbling to the shore. When you near Sandsend, you’ll find a series of steps that will take you down to the beach. Or, you can stay in the fishing village and grab a bite to eat at the cafe.
You can also choose to follow the road along the clifftops, which can be a safer route if you’re walking with children or your dog. Either way, you’ll be able to soak up the seaside views for the entirety of your journey.
So slip on your walking boots, lace them up tight and prepare for a walk that’ll knock them back off again.

From making sure they feel comfortable and secure to packing their favourite jumper, there can seem to be a whirlwind of things to think about.

As a family friendly campsite, Middlewood Farm knows exactly what to pack to ensure your camping holiday goes as smoothly as possible, which is why we’ve created this checklist of camping essentials to ensure you don’t get caught out without the important stuff.

Childrens camping clothes

You can never pack enough clothes when taking your children on holiday to a place where they’re guaranteed to get themselves mucky, but when you pack smarter, you pack lighter. Make sure your tots stay comfortable no matter what by remembering to bring:

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, a casual stroller or a complete walking novice seeking invigorating adventures in the wilderness, the North York Moors has the perfect route for you. With its vast heathland, charming woodland, and the delightful scent of rainfall on fresh grass, you’ll find your happiness here.

At Middlewood Farm , we truly believe that The North York Moors is the most glorious place in the country to lose yourself, but with our guide to walking routes in the vast heathland, you’re guaranteed not to get lost.

Levisham Moor and Hole of Horcum (5 miles)

The Hole of Horcum is steeped in ancient folklore that has shaped our perception of the area. It is said that the Hole of Horcurm was home to Wade the Giant, who one day became so angry with his wife that he scooped out a handful of earth to throw at her, thus creating the 400ft deep valley that is known and loved today.

If you look close enough, you can even find Wade’s stones; two standing stones that are said to mark the head and foot of his grave, making it the perfect walk for history lovers and families.

The walk begins in Saltergate, standing over the Hole of Horcum itself. You will then follow the track over Levisham Moor that presents you with a front row view of vast moorland as well as the stunning scenery of the sweeping amphitheatre.

When you reach Dundale Pond, the route will circle backwards around the opposite side of the valley, through Dendale Griff. Follow the trail all the way back to Saltergate, but don’t forget to stop and admire the magnificence of this treasure before you head on home.

This walk is suitable for dogs, but they should be kept on a short lead.

Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey (7 miles)

If you’re a fan of historic ruins nestled in vast sweeps of woodland with plenty of spots to have a picnic, then the walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey could be the perfect journey for you.

This peaceful route is carefully signposted to help you along your way, but this doesn’t detract from the calmly immersive feeling of being amongst the greenery of England’s countryside. Additionally, if you choose to go in the early brushes of springtime, you may be lucky enough to find bluebells along the route.

To enjoy this route, start in the market town of Helmsley and follow the signposts along your way to discover the well concealed charms of God’s own county. Don’t forget to pack plenty of picnic food and cold drinks to refresh your energy halfway through this 7 mile round walk.

White Horse Walk (3 miles)

The White Horse walk will take you on a short and sweet adventure along Sutton Bank, past the iconic White Horse that stands in the hills of Kilburn. This fascinating man-made miracle was cut into the limestone of Roulston Scar by John Hodgeson in 1857 and has been a proud landmark of the North York Moors ever since.

The White Horse walk is a louped route that starts and finishes at Sutton Bank National Park Centre. You’ll be taken past Cleveland Way, and around the cliffs of both Roulston Scar and Ivy Scar until you reach the White Horse. You will then loop back around, through woodland paths and back to Sutton Bank National Park Centre where you’ll find food and drinks at their Park Life Cafe.

Wainstones Walk (8 miles)

Wainstones is a large formation of organically carved sandstone rocks in the Cleveland Way. This 8 mile walk might look like a challenging trek, but the rewards of embarking on an adventure of this size are immeasurable.

Using the public parking provided, start your day with a healthy snack and bottle of water, and begin your wander along the moorland track through Cold Moor and Urra Moor. You may need to bring a change of warm socks as the track can often be boggy and slippery.

Then, take the stone track through Cleveland Way. It is up the steep ascent of this magnificent trail that you’ll find the Wainstones. This is the ideal spot to take a small break, perch on the stones and absorb panoramic views of the heather moorland that defines the vast landscape of the North York Moors.

Roseberry Topping (3 miles)

Roseberry Topping is one of the more famous hills in North Yorkshire and can be recognised by its mountain-like peak. This hill has an amazing slice of history attached to it. Both Bronze-Age and Iron-Age remains have been found in its vicinity and it was known to be a favourite childhood spot of famed British Explorer, Captain Cook.

You can begin your descent from Newton-under-Roseberry car park, and then simply follow the track and climb the steps until you reach the stone path near the base of Roseberry Topping. Once you’re through the gate at Roseberry Common, you’ll be able to follow the path to the summit and back down again.

Walking from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby - The Cleveland Way

Walking from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby lets you explore beautiful traditional seaside towns, a stunning coastline, and architecturally significant monuments.

If you’re interested in exploring the the North Yorkshire coast, there is no better trail than the Cleveland Way. This ancient route circumnavigates much of the national park, taking you through spectacular scenery and treating you to some stunning views.

In this post, we take a closer look at the section of the Cleveland Way that runs from Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby, approximately halfway around the complete trail. The segment is six miles long and easily walkable in an afternoon for people with an average level of fitness. Moreover, it takes you past some unique and interesting landmarks and places you can stop off for food and drink.

Starting In Robin Hood’s Bay

Robin Hood’s Bay is a historical smugglers' village. Captains would moor their boats here and bring cargo onto the mainland to avoid detection by the authorities at the larger ports. The village itself retains all of its historical charms and is a great place for individual explorers and families to begin the journey north to Whitby.

At Robin Hood’s Bay, you’ll find twisting, narrow cobbled streets and alleyways, many of which have boutique shops and cafés. Sailors and fishermen who lived in the town would have carried their cargo from docked ships in the bay up to the marketplace. So too would the smugglers who lived here between 1700 and 1850.

Despite its small size, Robin Hood’s Bay offers plenty of facilities, including pubs, B&Bs and toilet facilities. There are also views from the top of the village that let you look out to sea.

Heading Out Along The Cliff Tops

To get out of town, go down to the seafront and pick up the Cleveland Way. This part of the route is fully paved and snakes up and away from Robin Hood’s Bay onto the moors with the North Sea on the right.

As you climb, the elevation rises sharply. Eventually you will reach a gate into a field where you have an excellent view of the surrounding scenic countryside and coastline. From the clifftops, you should be able to see a large headland to the south and glimpses of the coastline to the north.

After some time, the paved path comes to an end, replaced by mown grass. The path is wide but can be quite boggy in places. There are fences protecting the heathland to the left but no barriers preventing you from falling off the cliffside to the right, so be careful.

As you make your way north along the path, it will frequently turn inland and then back out towards the cliffs again, as the topology changes. In some patches, there are sections of traditional stone walls remaining, though most of them have already collapsed into the sea.

Eventually, you will come to a series of gently sloping green fields on your left and with some rock formations out to sea where you will get your first glimpse of the white buildings of Whitby. At this point, the footpath becomes a single track hugging the coastline.

Entering Whitby

If you continue along the Cleveland Way, you will find yourself just outside the ruins of Whitby Abbey. There has been a religious site here since AD 657 when King Oswy of Northumbria founded it. The Gothic structure you see today dates back to the 13th century when the abbey once soared high above the Whitby coast. Unfortunately, centuries of weather, wear and war mean that, today, the building is a shadow of its former self. Even so, the location is still stunning, with exceptional views over the surrounding coastline.

As you continue towards the heart of Whitby, you will encounter the town’s famous 199 steps . These lead from the abbey at the top of the hill all the way down to the port.

Interestingly, researchers think that the steps might be even older than the abbey. In the medieval era, they were made of wood. However, in 1774, local builders substituted them for stone, creating something more robust.

Originally, people believed that climbing the 199 steps was a test of christian faith for those worshiping or praying at the Abbey. However, that story likely developed much later. The steps are necessary because of the shape of the surrounding land.

Whitby Town

After a long journey, many walkers are ready for a drink once they get into Whitby. The Whitby Brewery is a popular watering hole, serving a variety of traditional ales and beers. Over the last few years, it has been growing steadily and now it is one of the first most popular places to visit. There are sit-down options and tour tickets are available for those who want to see how ales are made. Popular local beers include Abbey Blonde, Whitby Whaler, Jet Black, Saltwick Nab and more.

Once you get into the centre of Whitby, you will find several famous fish and chip restaurants, celebrated across the country. Two of the most popular are Quayside which offers sit-down fish and chip dinners and Trenchers which won the UK’s Official Best Fish And Chip Restaurant In 2019. Diners can choose both restaurant and fish and chip takeaway options.

Those looking for a little action and adventure should check out The Endeavour Experience, open every day from 10.00am to 5:00pm. This attraction offers multiple exhibits, a chance to step aboard the beautiful HM Bark Endeavour commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1768, and a restaurant serving traditional food. There are amenities for young children too, making it suitable for all the family.

Those staying overnight in Whitby before embarking on the next section of the Cleveland way to Sandsend have a choice of hotels and accommodation. Great options include Bagdale Hall, The Langley Hotel, and the Marine Hotel. Luxury seaside apartments are also available.
